What is a Ward?

A Ward is a smaller local division used within an urban local government area. Municipal Corporations, Municipal Councils and other Urban Local Bodies may divide their jurisdiction into Wards for local administration and representation.

Ward numbers, names and boundaries can change over time. For this reason, Bharat Population keeps Ward records associated with the relevant source period and administrative hierarchy where possible.

Ward and Municipality

A Ward is generally a subdivision of a Municipality or another Urban Local Body. One Municipality can contain many Wards, while each Ward belongs to its relevant urban administrative structure.

Ward and Census Data

Ward-level Census data should be read according to the specific Census year and urban boundary used in that dataset. A Ward number or boundary used during Census 2011 may differ from a later municipal Ward structure.

Important: A current Ward should not automatically be matched with an older Census Ward solely because the Ward number is the same. Boundary and administrative mapping should also be verified.

Census 2011 can provide previous official Ward-level demographic information where suitable records exist. Census 2027 remains the current Census focus of Bharat Population.

When verified newer Ward-level population data becomes available, it can be added under its own Census year while earlier official records remain available for historical reference.

Ward Boundaries Can Change

Municipal boundaries and Ward structures are periodically revised. New Wards may be created, Ward numbers may change and boundaries can be reorganised as urban areas grow.

For accurate historical comparison, Ward-level data should therefore be associated with the correct Census year and local administrative structure.
