Data Sources – Bharat Population
Bharat Population aims to present population and demographic information in a clear, structured and transparent way. This page explains the main sources used for Census and population data, how different Census years are handled, and how updates are added to the website.
Primary Census Data Source

The primary official source for Census-related population information is the
Office of the Registrar General & Census Commissioner, India,
Government of India.
Official Census resources may include national, State, District, Sub-District,
Town, Village and other demographic tables depending on the Census release and dataset.

Census 2011 Data
Census 2011 is currently used as an important previous official Census baseline on Bharat Population.
Where relevant records are available, Census 2011 data may include:
Total Population
Official population count recorded for the relevant Census area.
Male & Female Population
Separate male and female population figures from the Census dataset.
Households
Number of households recorded for the selected administrative or settlement area.
Literacy
Literacy information derived from available Census records.
Sex Ratio
Calculated or displayed from the available male and female population figures.
Urban & Rural Population
Urban and rural population values where the relevant Census classification is available.
Census 2027 Data
Census 2027 is the current Census focus of Bharat Population. Where official Census 2027 population figures have not yet been added, pages may display an Awaiting Release or awaiting-data status.
Bharat Population does not automatically treat projected or estimated population values as official Census 2027 figures.
A page may show 2027 as the current Census year even when the latest verified population record available for that location is from Census 2011. In such cases, the 2011 data is clearly identified as previous official Census data.
How Census Years Are Stored
Population records are stored separately by Census year. This helps prevent values from different Census periods from being mixed together.
For example:
- Census 2011 → Previous Official Census Data
- Census 2027 → Current Census Data when available
- Future Census years → Stored separately when verified data is added
Administrative Hierarchy
Bharat Population organises location-based Census information using administrative and settlement levels found in the available source data.
Depending on the dataset, records may be organised as:
Administrative Boundaries Can Change
Administrative boundaries, State status, District boundaries, Sub-District names and local classifications may change over time.
Older Census datasets reflect the administrative structure that existed during that Census period. Therefore, a Census 2011 record may not always match the current administrative structure exactly.
For example, a location that was part of one State or District during Census 2011 may later belong to a newly created administrative unit.
Calculated Fields
Some values displayed on Bharat Population may be calculated from official source fields rather than copied directly as a percentage or ratio.
Examples can include:
- Literacy rate calculated from literate population and eligible population
- Sex ratio calculated from female and male population
- Population growth calculated between two available Census years
Calculated values are intended to help users understand the source data more easily.
Data Import and Updates
Verified datasets may be processed into a structured format before being added to the Bharat Population database. During this process, source fields can be mapped into population, male, female, households, literacy, sex ratio, urban, rural and administrative hierarchy fields.
When a newer Census year is added, older Census records are preserved where possible so historical comparisons can remain available.
Source Verification
Before population figures are treated as official Census data, Bharat Population aims to use records from reliable and identifiable sources.
Priority is given to:
- Official Census of India datasets
- Government of India publications
- Government administrative datasets where relevant
- Verified official Census tables and files
Corrections and Data Issues
Large Census datasets may contain historical spellings, administrative classifications or mappings that differ from current usage.
